The Film Industry’s New Geography Is About Jobs, Not Glamour

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], October 22: Hollywood has spent decades selling the illusion that every important film begins and ends in California. The industry’s actual business, however, has become considerably less sentimental. When a studio decides where to shoot, it weighs tax incentives, crew availability, soundstage capacity, travel costs and the price of keeping a production running. A beautiful sunset is useful. A competitive budget is rather more persuasive.

New York is strengthening its position as a production destination while California tries to bring more projects back home. The contest is not simply about which state can attract the next blockbuster. It is about where the economic benefits of filmmaking will land—and whether traditional production centres can retain the workers and infrastructure that made them powerful in the first place.
